Success for any ESL program depends on creating a welcoming environment with high standards, an engaging interactive language rich program with frequent assessment of student progress. There are many ways technology can enrich any ESL program thereby engaging and motivating students in meaningful learning exercises.

Technology Supports:

  • Activate prior knowledge by displaying common images on the SMART board and attaching audio naming the items.
  • Reinforce and assess learning through interactive quizzes created in Notebook software and presented on the SMART board.
  • Provide decoding clues for text passages by recording the text and adding it to the lesson on the SMART board
  • Focus student attention on specific texts or images by activating one or more of the reveal features available on the SMART board.
  • Have students work at the SMART board to highlight specific words or phrases with the built in pens and highlighters
  • Use interactive listening activities on the SMART board and have students respond using the Senteo interactive student response system
  • Improve spelling applying spell check on the SMART board after converting handwriting to text.
  • Use a document camera and LCD projector to project worksheets onto a standard whiteboard. Students complete the activities using dry erase marker

Using the SMART board and a text passage with highlighted words, such as the one above, provides ESL students with the opportunity to broaden their vocabulary by using a thesaurus to locate synonyms that can replace the highlighted words.
