Hearing Impaired
Characteristics: There are many causes of hearing loss. Hearing loss can range from mild to profound. For educators the goal is to create visual cues that enable hearing impaired students to be successful in the classroom.
Technology Supports:
- Ensure all students hear every word as well as videos and announcements with a classroom Audio Enhancement system. Connect the student's FM system to the amplifier to ensure the student hears not only the teacher's voice but also hears any music, audio, and sound played in the classroom.
- Keep students focused on the content of a text passage by displaying the passage on the SMART board. The teacher can continue to sign while student attention is focused on the content.
A classroom audio system distributes sound evenly throughout the classroom, overcoming ambient noise providing a more inclusive learning environment for students who are hard of hearing. FM units can be plugged into the amplifier ensuring that students with profound hearing loss can hear everything that is said in the classroom.
Facilitating math, reading and other learning activities at the SMART board allows hearing impaired students to follow the flow of the lesson. Teachers are able to sign while all eyes are directed at the SMART board.
