Technology for Students with Special Needs

Inclusive Learning Environments provide multiple means of representation, expression, engagement, and evaluation to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom.

Technology can be the great equalizer in a classroom with diverse learners. Whereas teachers can find it difficult to differentiate instruction for 30+ students in one class, all with different needs and abilities, “assistive technology” (devices and software to assist students with disabilities) can often help teachers personalize lessons and skills enhancement to each child. Children with learning disabilities often have better technology skills than their teachers and are drawn to computers and other gadgets, so using them in the classroom makes perfect sense. For children with physical disabilities, technology can give access to learning opportunities previously closed to them.

Advanced Education provides technology resources like SMART Boards, ASK NAO Evolution Robotics (Autism Solution for kids), Document Cameras, Swivl Robot and classroom audio systems help to create Inclusive Learning Environments in ways that support students with special needs as well as all students in the classroom.

We can apply many of the learning strategies advocated by organizations like CAST (Center for Applied Special Technology) and HelpGuide ( www.helpguide.org ) to afford varied learning opportunities that enable special needs students to learn by employing tools and strategies not available in the past.
